Call for Case Study Abstracts

Call for Case Study Abstracts authored by athletic training students.  The student authors of the top four abstracts will be chosen to present at the 23rd Annual SEATA Athletic Training Student Symposium in Atlanta, GA, Feb 8-9, 2008.  A faculty or staff person from the institution of the student submitting the abstract must be a co-author and must have been directly involved in the medical treatment/care of the clinical case.  Submissions selected for formal presentation will provide a 5-8 minute summary of their case study at the symposium during a general session.

The top 10 rated case study abstracts will be invited to present their case study in a Poster Presentation format.  The top 4 rated case study abstracts will be invited to provide a 5-8 minute Oral Presentation during a general session, as well as present their case study in a Poster Presentation format.

Deadline: Due electronically December 1, 2007

Content
: Clinical Case Report abstracts provide for the presentation of unique individual injury/illness cases of general interest to the NATA membership.

Instructions for Submission
:

Each abstract must have the following format:

  • FORMATTING:
    • Microsoft Word 2003 is the only format that the submissions will be accepted.
    • 1” margins on all four sides of document.
    • FONT:  Times New Roman, 10 point
    • Single space all text, with single blank space between each section.
    • Left justified all text.
    • The case study abstract must only contain the Subject Headings provided below.  Subject Headings are placed on a line with no other text.  Next line will begin information related to the Subject Heading
    • Do not include tables or figures.  A minimum of one paragraph should be presented for each of the following required Subject Areas
    • **The body of the clinical case report abstract must not exceed 600 words.**
       
  • SUBJECT HEADINGS (type as listed)

ABSTRACT TITLE: 

The title should not contain information that may reveal the identity of the individual or the specific nature of the medical problem to the reader.


AUTHORS AND AFFILIATION

Include the names of all authors (The student author must be listed first).  Enter the author name(s) based on level of involvement in the clinical case study.  The authors will be listed as follows on one line per author:  Name, Credentials, followed by Title and Employer (or school) /City/State


Personal Data
(age, sex, sport and/or occupation of the individual)


Past Personal Medical History
(e.g. identify conditions pertinent to the patient’s condition and pertinent aspects of his/her medical history, which may include past family history of conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.)


Current Medical History
(include current complaints of injury; describe mechanism of injury or events pertinent to injury/condition)


Physical Signs and Symptoms
(a brief summary of the physical findings)


Differential Diagnosis
(array of possible injuries)


Results of Diagnostic Imaging/Laboratory Tests


Final Diagnosis


Treatment and Outcome
(e.g., treatment, surgical technique, rehabilitation program, final outcome)


Deviation from the Expected
(a brief description of what makes this case unique)

Evaluation criteria of abstracts will involve these areas:

  • Uniqueness of the clinical case

  • Proper format submitted; submissions not following the format listed above will be rejected.

  • Content (appropriate & relevant information in each content area)

  • Preparation (proper grammar, organization, & flow)

  • Relevance (appropriate to healthcare services provided by athletic trainers across the lifespan)

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES:

Your submission will be submitted via email with attachments.  Submission documents must be formatted as Microsoft Word 2003 documents. The cover letter should include the presenter’s school, mailing address, city, state, zip code, work phone, fax, and e-mail address.  In the letter, please indicate the name of the student’s program director (include email address and phone number).  Specifically, please title the subject line of the e-mail message “SEATA Student Clinical Case Study 2008”.

Please title your (3) file attachments as follows:

  • Cover Letter - Include your first name last name and the word “Cover” (e.g., CatherineJones.Cover.doc)

  • Original Abstract - Include your last name and the word “Abstract” (e.g., CatherineJones.Abstract.doc)

  • Blind Copy - Include your last name and the word “Blind” (e.g., CatherineJones.Blind.doc)

Please forward the cover letter, original abstract, and the blind copy (that which does not indicate any information concerning the author’s name or institution) via e-mail to KSTRAUKS@AUBURN.EDU

You will receive an email verification that your submission has been received and accepted within 3 working days.  If you do not receive a written verification within two (2) days after submission (which may be due to email Spam-blocking), please contact Karen Straub Stanton (phone information below).

If accepted for presentation, the original abstract will appear as submitted in the conference proceedings notebook. Be sure to carefully check for spelling and grammatical errors before submitting the abstract for review.
